Audience.

My target audience is for teenagers who are mostly interested in music magazines like KERRANG, Q, NME, Mojo etc. You would find my images in these magazines, expressing what the bands look like when performing live in a gig hall or wherever else they perform. If the photographs are edited well, then the best ones will be added into the magazines which will show the readers what is expected in photography, and what makes a good picture.  Single photographs of maybe male singers would be added into the magazines for females to pin them up on their walls to admire them, and the other way round for the males.

Production

To make my work better, I could gave spent more time on manipulating the photographs to make them better and look a bit more professional. I could have added more detail to every bit of information that I wrote about to make it more professional and I could have used more photographic words. To make my project better, I would have made the layout of my whole blog a lot prettier and make it look like a profession photographers blog.  The pictures that I took were mostly the same in a way, so to change that I would have used other pictures that were from different angles rather than just taking them from the front. I would manipulate more pictures so there is more to see, and to show that I understand Photoshop better.

Self  Evaluation

At first, this whole task was very hard to get to grips with. I had no idea how to use Photoshop because I found it very confusing to use with all the different buttons and applications to press and use. Manipulating pictures was one of the things I truly struggled with and I needed a lot of help doing it. I have learnt a lot from doing these tasks. I now know how to edit photos correctly but still need to learn new things with Photoshop. Working on my own with my own topic was great because my topic was unique which proves that I couldn’t copy any one else’s work so I can get the grades on my own. Being able to pick my own topic was good because I want to be a music journalist so by picking band photography this proves that I can get a head start on it. I was able to use the photographs I had taken from a while back, so they have gone to good use.

Final Reflection

My finished work didn’t really turn out the way I expected it to but the work I have produced is still good in my opinion. Although I could have done it a lot better. I think that there wasnt enough time to complete everything though because we all had to basically rush our work to meet the deadlines. If we had a few more months or whatever to complete everything then my work would have been a lot better than expected. I am proud of the work I have produced because it gave me a good sense on how photographers really work, although I might be a ammature photography, the work I have done is good enough.

Historical Content

The work I have done can relate to popular culture. This is because music is a big part of most teenagers lives. Teenagers always want to know about who’s in the charts and what certain gigs were like if they couldn’t make it. Teens buy music magazines for the photographs to put on their bedroom walls, use in their work or talk about with their friends. It also can reltate to historical content because some bands have made history so reading about old bands and seeing the photographs are making history.

REAL LIFE PRACTICE SCENARIO

In this task, I have been asked to choose a magazine of my choice to explain what magazine my photos would fit into. I have chosen KERRANG magazine.  As I have chosen a music magazine, my photographs have to fit into that particular genre. I have taken photographs of specific band members and these would fit in nicely with the magazine when they have been edited professionally. I have edited 3 pictures to show quality and make them look like the magazine would actually want to use them.

OWN PHOTOS.

This is the first of my photographs I have taken for Band photography. I chose to take a lot of Band photographs because you cant always get the ‘perfect image’ when the singers are moving and jumping about. I took this photograph at a London gig in a sweaty crowded music hall. I then edited it on Photoshop which you can see on the right hand side. I gave the photograph a outer glow and a inner glow around the outside of the singer so it looks like his soul is gasping to escape to the real world. I think it makes it look exciting and different to what normal photographs look like edited. I also think it looks like he is being possesed which makes it look quite scary. I chose to use this photograph because it is different as I used the camera in a black and white mode which makes it different to using it in colour. It was quite a simple photograph to manipulate. The purpose of this image is to show the readers of KERRANG magazine that whatever photograph you take can always be edited in different ways, and to show the excitement that happens at gigs.

untitled – Photoshop manipulated picture

This is my second photograph which I chose to use in this task. I took this photograph at a bigger gig venue and I was on the top level of the gig so I got a better view of the stage, which made it easier to take the photographs. I edited it on Photoshop and gave it lots of different effects such as a inner shadow, pattern overlay, a inner and outter glow. The other effects you can see in the link. I kept the background dark so there is more effect and you focus all your attention on the singer. I gave him a texture so he stands out more and to make the photograph look more unique. I chose to use this photograph because I wanted to make the picture different and to stand out more. And because it is taken at a side angle, its different to other band photographs. When you look directly at the photograph, the singer looks partly like a ghost which makes the photograph creepy and different in a way. The purpose of this image is to show the readers of KERRANG magazine that you can make photos different, they dont have to be plain and basic.

123 – manipulated photograph

This is my third and final photograph. This photograph was one of the hardest photos to take. I was right at the front infront of the barrier, everytime i tried to take a good decent picture I was getting pushed against the barrier. But the final result was one of the best I think. I chose this photograph to use in this task because it was taken up close to the singer so i got his features perfectly. I edited it once again on Photoshop. I manipulated it once and I chose the effect distortion. It looks simliar to an alien which makes the photo look more unique and interesting. It isn’t what you would normally what you would see in a magazine like KERRANG but it gives it a good effect and makes it retro. The purpose of this image was to make it different in so many ways but mainly to show that when you know how to edit, you can manipulate it in anyway possible. It shows the readers that photography can be fun and if you can get an up close image, you can make it different in lots of different ways, and is fun to play around with. I would expect KERRANG magazine to use this image to show how retro you can make images and show the readers that photography is a interesting thing to do.

The distance from the surface of a lens or mirror to its focal point. Also called focal distance.

ISO

Sensitivity of film. In digital  photography, ISO measures the sensitivity of the image sensor. The same principles apply as in film photography – the lower the number the less sensitive your camera is to light and the finer the grain. Higher ISO settings are generally used in darker situations to get faster shutter speeds (for example an indoor sports event when you want to freeze the action in lower light) – however the cost is noisier shots.

DIGITAL MANIPULATION

There are many programmes on the computer that can manipulate pictures. For example, photoshop. On this programme, you can crop pictures, clone stamps, make magazine pages, edit pictures and much more. It is used in magazines and newspapers for journalists to edit them and make them unique.

The aperture stop of a photographic lense that can be adjusted to control the amount of light reaching the film or image sensor.  Its also known as the lense diaphragm opening in a camera lense which regulates the amount of light passing through onto the film inside the camera. The moment the shutter curtain opens during an exposure process. The size of the aperture in a lense can either be fixed or the most popular form in an adjustable type, like an SLR camera.

SHUTTER SPEED

The shutter speed refers to the amount of time that the shutter of the camera is open and the film is exposed to the light. Normal settings will include speeds of 1 to 1000. A shutter speed of 1 indicates that the shutter will be open for 1 second.  Each setting on the shutter speed is also known as a STOP. Each STOP will expose the film for exactly half or double the amount of time, depending on the side to which the setting was done.

It depends on the camera type. For inexpensive “point & shoot” cameras, the main difference is that a film camera takes the picture immediately when you press the button. On some digital cameras, especially the older ones, there is a delay, sometimes up to a second or more, between pressing the button and the camera taking the picture.

With the more expensive SLR cameras, there is no difference in shutter response time between film and digital cameras. Most digital SLR’s can take multiple pictures as rapidly as a film camera with a motor drive.

Nikon Camera

For a digital camera there are many different lenses that can be used to take the exact picture that you need to take –

Zoom Lense.

Its fast focus which means its a ring-type USM which works in concert with the camera to provide super-fast, precision auto focusing and predictive tracking.The lens has specially shaped lens elements and Super Spectra coatings to suppress ghosting and flare, which can be caused by reflections off digital camera sensors. The lens allows you to get extremely close to subjects, exaggerating the difference in size between a near object and its background. A circular aperture provides a pleasing background blur when shooting with a wide aperture; ideal for creating a sense of depth and getting your subject or model to stand out from the background.

Flashes

In photography, many different types of flashes can be used to create the perfect picture. A flashbulb is a device which produces a lot of light as a result of the combustion of material in an oxygen rich atmosphere.A flashbulb can only be flashed once.They produce a “softer” light output with longer duration due to the combustion characteristics. Larger flashbulbs can produce more light than any portable electronic flashgun and this can be useful if mains or grid electric power is not available to supply electrically powered strobe lights or other types of lighting. Flashbulbs provide a lot of light output which can be useful to high speed photography applications where high frame per second speeds require high light output to capture images of high speed events on film or electronic storage media.

Tripod

Tripods are used especially for photography to preven camera movement. They prevent the camera from moving and stops it from shaking when you are trying to take pictures. They are also useful in producing framing of an image. The tripod is always necessary for photography aswell as video recording uses aswell.

I like this picture because it shows a clear view of the model in clear detail. The backdrop is very effective for the picture as you can focus all your attention on the model without getting distracted. The camera angle is above the model so the contrast goes from dark to light. The backdrop is quite plain and simple so all your attention is aimed directly at the model. The light of the flash is directed on his hair, this shows that the photographer has used flash. A zoom lense has been used to zoom into the detail of the models face showing clear detail of his appearance. This picture would be found on fashion websites to show what you would look like wearing that particular clothing. It would also be found in clothes and music magazines to publicise a particular clothing brand.

I like this picture because it is quite a basic picture which to me means that it is easy to figure out. The camera angle is aimed above the model, looking down on her. The back drop is very plain which means you focus directly at the model. There is a deep shadow which appears in the background making the picture seem more effective and detailed. I think that a zoom lense has been used partly to focus mainly on the model and nothing else. The contrast is clear making it easy to focus on what is going on in the picture and how the model actually looks.  By using a plain backdrop it shows true emotion as the backdrop boring and has nothing going for it. By having the model in wacky clothes, it represents her emotion to being unhappy but she is trying to hide that fact by wearing what she is wearing, and by holding random objects. This photo would be found in teen magazines to publicise the particular ‘scene’ fashion and stereotype.

Both of the pictures are simliar. The photographers use different styles in which they focus on the models by placing their cameras in different positions to get different effects.  They both use different back drops so that the models are the only thing you focus on.

I like this photo because it shows full detail of the singer, and it shows darkness behind him. It creates a smooth atmosphere and shows calmness in the singer. I like the way the photographer has showed in depth detail of the singer and the colors are clear throughout the whole picture. The photographer is beneath the singer so the contrast is in a greater detail. The shutter has been pressed when the singers lyrics seem powerful as his eyes are shut, which shows that he has passion in what he is singing about.The photographer has used a zoom lense to get full detail of the singer which makes it easier to see. The contrast goes from dark to light and the singer has been spotlighted so all the attention is focused on him. You would find this photo in a band magazine which would be reviewing the singers gig, it would also be on the internet on websites.

I like this photo because it directly shows the singer as the backdrop is plain black so it is much easier to see him. The contrast in the middle is very bright so we can focus on the singer but behind the singer, the contrast is pitch black making the photo seem more professional and appealing to look at. The shutter has been pressed when the singer is in depth with his lyrics showing deep emotion. The photographer is beneath the singer so that more detail is shown close up with a zoom lense so we can see how much the singer loves what he is doing. The lighting that is on the singer makes it more interesting to look at. It has a dull effect in a way but makes the photo seem more effective. It seems that the photographer has spent a lot of time trying to get the lighting right so that the light is focused on the singer.This photo would be in music magazines reviewing the singers gig and it would also be on the internet promoting the band.

Both of these pictures are similar because they’re both in the same style and are set up in the same way. They both have a simliar back drop, and by having this backdrop it makes the photo more interesting as you get to focus on the picture in greater detail.
